Siamo nel pieno della stagione del passaggio dei gruccioni, uccelli dai colori intensi e dal canto distintivo, dopo che hanno passato l'inverno in Africa tropicale.
Una volta catturati e inanellati, li rilasciamo in grupppo, poichè tendono a vivere in colonie e ad essere gregari negli spostamenti, con stormi formati anche da centinaia di individui. Si pensi, infatti, che pur essendo monogami, l'allevamento dei piccoli avviene anche grazie all'aiuto di altri componenti della colonia, generalmente maschi.
This is the time of the season when the bee-eaters are migrating, after they have spent the winter in tropical Africa. These birds are characterised by intense colours and distinctive songs. Once captured and ringed, we release them in groups, as they tend to live in colonies and be gregarious in their movements, with flocks formed also by hundreds of individuals. Indeed, despite being monogamous, the rearing of chicks also takes place thanks to the help of other members of the colony, generally males.

Il nome comune in inglese del gruccione 'bee-eater' significa mangiatore di api, ma nella realtà questo uccello si ciba di diversi insetti alati, fra cui anche vespe, bombi, ma anche coleotteri e libellule. Il guccione è famoso per ingoiare le prede velenose solo dopo averle sfregate su un ramo per staccare il pungiglione ed eliminare il veleno. Un singolo individuo può arrivare a mangiare ben 225 insetti in un giorno!
Their English common name is due to the fact that they eat bees, but they also eat other flying insects, such as wasps, bumblebees, beetles and dragonflies. The bee-eater is famous for swallowing poisonous preys only after rubbing them on a branch to remove the sting and eliminate the poison. A single individual can eat up to 225 insects in one day!
